How Does Ductless Work?

A traditional heating and cooling system consists of a unit outside, an indoor air handler and a maze of air ducts to deliver air throughout your home. An AC mini-split doesn’t need ducts, at all.

A ductless AC still has an outside unit, but the air handler is installed directly on the wall inside a specific room in your house. It takes air from inside and sends it outside through tubing that you don’t see — and then the conditioned air is sent right back to the handler.  No ducts needed, and no air lost.

A ductless AC install is a perfect solution for several scenarios. The most obvious situation for a ductless AC is a home that doesn’t contain ducts — like some older homes. Advantages Of A Ductless AC

You’ve probably noticed by now, but energy efficiency is one of the biggest selling points of investing in a ductless AC system. Air conditioners are measured by something called the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER. It’s a fancy term for a simple idea — SEER measures how efficiently the air conditioning system is going to be able to cool your home. (It’s comparable to how we discuss a car’s miles per gallon average.)

SEER is measured on a scale — and most traditional AC systems fall between a 13 to 21 SEER rating. Here in San Antonio, the minimum SEER for an AC is 14. Ductless mini split systems are almost always at a SEER rating in the 20s, with some brands and models reaching a SEER rating of 30 or higher.

Ductless AC systems come with more advantages, such as:

• They often last longer than traditional AC units, which means you won’t have to worry about replacing your system every decade or so.
• A ductless AC can also improve your home’s indoor air quality. Many of the problems that cause indoor air quality (mold, for one) start in your air ducts. With a ductless system, you don’t have to worry about this, either.
• The ductless AC installation process is also much simpler than a traditional AC install — fewer parts and fewer things to worry about. This also helps if something goes wrong with your ductless system. Because of its simplicity, ductless AC repair is often less convoluted than a traditional repair.
